Along with men, women are working equally in agriculture in Khagrachari. As men plow and plant paddy in the land, Khagrachari tribals and even Bengali women are going down to the land to cultivate and plant paddy. Rather, women are more hardworking and active than men. They eat something in the morning and go to the field, after lunch they work tirelessly in the field again.
It has been seen that women are working on the land like men in different areas of Khagrachari. As they are planting various vegetables, they are also planting rice seedlings, raising nets. Just like men in work clothes planting paddy seedlings in rows. Especially in Vaibon Rham, Kamalchari Headman Para, Kuradia Hara, Perachra, Khagrachari Sadare New Zealand, Satbhaiya Para, Panchari, Dighinala Matiranga, Mahalchari, Maischari, Guimara, Manikchari, Lakshmichari, Ramgarh areas, women work on land like men. They planted paddy seedlings in groups.
Talking to them, they said that they had no problem working, even if it was difficult to go down to the land to plant rice seedlings, they did not mind it. They are doing this work to support the work of husband and son on the land to meet the needs of the family. Even so that men get the opportunity to do business and children get education, women are doing hard work like planting paddy in the land. Some women in Kanchairi neighborhood of Panchari said that there is not much work at home all day and they like to work especially during the farming season. They also do day labor (badla) work on other people’s land as well as planting rice seedlings on their own or barge land. It gives them extra income and it benefits the family.
Khagrachari District Agriculture Officer (Acting) Md. Bachirul Alam said that in the hilly areas, along with men, women do various types of work including threshing and planting rice, and are earning extra income. This year, the target for Aman rice is 29 thousand 50 hectares.
